Antihistamines counteract histamine, which is a chemical released to cause inflammation and itchiness as part of an allergic reaction. Diphenhydramine works by blocking H- 1 receptors, which occur on the small blood vessels and smooth muscles. That’s pretty fiery, but despite what much of the media coverage of this new pepper has claimed, the Dragon’s Breath is not lethally hot. Smith had the pepper tested and claims it registers 2. Scoville heat units (SHUs), which, if verified by the folks at Guinness, would be a world record for heat. But in case blinding agony isn’t enough to dissuade a daredevil’s heart, the Daily Post, which was first to report on the pepper, includes an even graver warning paraphrased from the university: “.. ![]() As for what’s arriving, “Young Frankenstein” tops the list for the classic we’re happiest to see on the roster. As with all hot peppers, the Dragon’s Breath chili’s extreme heat is mainly the result of capsaicin, which tricks sensory neurons into telling the brain that they are literally burning. Eat enough of it, and you can experience more serious effects, like vomiting, abdominal pain and yes, even death—but only at high enough doses. A study in mice found the minimum lethal dose of capsaicin is 1. Since the average adult person weighs 5. Realistically, it’s probably impossible to breed a pepper so spicy that just one could kill you with its heat. That’s because if we assume a hot pepper is around. ![]() ![]() ![]() Exercise, diet and medical information for men and women from MSN Health India. Stay fit with yoga, weight loss tips, workouts and diet tracker. If, as Smith contends, the Dragon’s Breath registers 2. Scoville heat units, it’d be nearly 1 million SHUs more intense than the Carolina reaper, which averages 1. The Scoville scale is based on dilution: 1,0. SHUs means that you have to dilute the extract from 1 gram of dried pepper 1,0. Pure capsaicin registers a staggering 1. SHUs. Scientists can convert between the amount of capsaicin per gram of dried pepper and SHUs; the Dragon’s Breath’s 2. SHUs translates to 0. Since hot peppers are ~8. Dragon’s Breath. So, to consume the minimum lethal dose of 5. For an habanero- sized pepper, which look twice as large as the fruits Smith created, that would be about 2. Realistically, it’s probably impossible to breed a pepper so spicy that just one could kill you with its heat. That’s because if we assume a hot pepper is around 1. You could potentially create a lethal single pepper if you bred one that is far larger and much hotter at the same time. A strain twice as hot as a Dragon’s Breath at the size of a bell pepper would theoretically do it, but is not likely biologically feasible. But what about that note about anaphylactic shock issued by the university? That’s just a standard medical warning. Anaphylactic shock occurs when allergic reactions go nuclear. There are tens of thousands of known allergens out there, any of which could potentially cause a life- threatening case of anaphylaxis in someone who is allergic. And yet, despite decades of study including injection trials, there are no published cases of capsaicin- induced anaphylaxis. ![]() Capsaicin and similar chemicals are being explored as a way of reducing allergic responses. Peppers can carry other allergens, however. Spice allergies, including those to pepper- derived paprika and cayenne, do exist, but they are rare and due to pollen- like compounds, not capsaicin. There have also been severe allergic reactions to bell peppers, all of which means that doctors can’t rule out the possibility that someone could have an allergic reaction to the Dragon’s Breath. Similar warnings are common for any drug or supplement where anyone has had a serious reaction, including Advil and Aspirin. In the end, the only people who have to worry about anaphylaxis from Dragon’s Breath are those who are already allergic to peppers or pepper- derived spices of any kind, and they have as much to fear from a jalape. Smith, for his part, believes the Dragon’s Breath may wind up serving a beneficial medical purpose, as the potent oils from its flesh could be used as anaesthetic. So chiliheads out there—with their iron stomachs and appetite for pain—can rejoice in knowing that the Dragon’s Breath is not especially lethal. Not that they will get their chance to experience the cripplingly- hot flesh of this pepper anytime soon. The only way to see the peppers for now is to attend the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in the U. All the Best Movies (and Shows) Coming to and Leaving Netflix in June 2. Your Netflix queue is about to undergo its monthly shakeup. With each month comes the extraction of TV shows and movies from the Netflix library — a harsh reality only made better by new content being added to the platform. June is no different. The streaming platform says June is all about Ladies’ Night—referring to the shows and films with strong female leads like the new season of “Orange Is the New Black” and originals like “GLOW” and “Free Rein.” Or even the most recent season of “Scandal” and “Quantico.”While there’s a ton of great new stuff coming to Netflix, June will see a few fan favorites leaving the library, including, most egregiously, “This is Spinal Tap.” If you haven’t watched “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids” and “D2: The Mighty Ducks” recently, you better get on that. And Season 1 of “Bob the Builder” is going away, too—sorry, kids. As for what’s arriving, “Young Frankenstein” tops the list for the classic we’re happiest to see on the roster. The more of our lives are wired, the more they become vulnerable to things like software glitches and hackers. That includes pieces of technology we put in our bodies—recently, it’s become clear that vital medical devices like insulin pumps and pacemakers possess the same vulnerabilities as those ill- advised connected tea kettles. New research makes clear just how vulnerable medical devices really can be. In a recent study, researchers with the security company White. Scope looked at pacemakers and defibrillators from four different manufacturers, as well as the systems used to monitor and maintain them. And they found 8,0. In case it’s not clear, that is a very big number. The researchers found all four of the device ecosystems had major problems, including software systems that were not up to date and storage of private patient data that was not encrypted. When the devices were connected to monitoring systems, not one required a login name and password or checked to make sure that devices they were connecting to were authentic. The report notes that pacemaker security faces “some serious challenges.” That might even be a little too polite. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is particularly concerning in the aftermath of the Wanna Cry ransomware attack, which impacted many hospitals around the globe. That attack included the first known instance of ransomware directly affecting a medical device, in this case, hospital equipment made by Bayer. The impact of hacked personal medical devices, though, could be far graver— endangering patient’s lives as well as exposing private medical data. This is something cybersecurity experts have warned about for years. Back in 2. 01. 3, the hacker Barnaby Jack claimed he could take control of a pacemaker from up to 5. Dick Cheney famously had a doctor remove the wireless capability of his pacemaker to protect it from hackers, even though it meant software updates would require surgery. But while medical devices are often old and out of date and therefore more vulnerable to attack, so far there have been no known cases of hackers harming patients by exploiting those flaws. But the FDA and other agencies are increasingly concerned this might happen in the not- so- distant future. In January, the FDA issued a warning that certain cardiac implants could be hacked and reprogrammed to send out potentially deadly incorrect signals or shocks. Last fall, Johnson & Johnson was forced to tell its customers that its insulin pumps had a security flaw hackers could use to deploy a potentially fatal overdose of insulin. The more medical devices on the market that communicate wirelessly, the bigger the threat of hacking grows. Yet, it’s clear from reports like White. Scope’s that for device manufacturers, even basic security like setting up a login and password is not much of a concern. Another recent study looked at the broader medical device market and found that only 1. Device manufacturers are beginning to pay attention to these things, hiring cybersecurity experts and setting up programs for white hat hackers to report flaws. But when a hack could mean life or death, they can’t fix those systems soon enough. ![]() ![]() ![]() News archive. C HFE gene mutations, diet, and life- style factors on iron status in a general Mediterranean population from Tarragona, Spain. Many studies have analyzed the relation between HFE mutations and iron status . There are a few other recent studies that explore external factors that interact with HFE mutations in modifying the phenotypic expression in indicators of iron status of the genetic HFE makeup . However, to our knowledge, the present study is the only one to evaluate the impact of the three common variants of the HFE gene, the diet and life style variables on indicators of iron status in a sample representative of the general Spanish Mediterranean population. The prevalence of S6. C variant in a general population and its relation with iron status has scarcely been investigated. The S6. 5C heterozygote genotype is infrequent in our and in most European populations, and, contrary to Mura et al’s. The influence of single HFE heterozygous or even homozygous mutations for H6. D on SF is not significant independent of gender (Table 2). However, the compounded heterozygous C2. Y/H6. 3D genotype displays the most significant elevation of TS and SF values, in both women, and men. The phenotypic expression of the compounded heterozygous mutations involving the H6. D mutation suggests an important role in expression or penetrance of the other mutations. The H6. 3D variant has a lower effect on iron status, but its repercussion is very important due to its elevated frequency (3. As in our population, an elevated prevalence of this mutation has been observed in other populations in the southern Europe . The MLR models used in the analysis of our data enabled us to estimate the effect of HFE mutations on the levels of iron in our ostensibly healthy general population, independent of the contributions of diet and other life- style factors. In the overall population the compound genotypes are associated with a 1. C2. 82. Y/H6. 3D) and 1. H6. 3D/S6. 5C) increase in the TS concentrations relative to the subjects with wild type HFE. Also, 3. 7. 7% of the variation in serum ferritin concentration is explained by the heterozygous compound C2. Y/H6. 3D. It is important to note that elevations in TS are more evident in men with HFE compound polymorphisms involving H6. D variant than elevations in SF. Organ damage associated with hemochromatosis occurs only when both TS and SF are significantly elevated, the risk of which appears to be somewhat higher in these cases . Unfortunately, the small number of cases limits the strength of our interpretations. Based on the TS distributions an important percentage of our subjects (6. C2. 82. Y, H6. 3D, and S6. C genotypes have elevated values of TS (> 4. SF (between 1. 10 and 2. These results are higher than those found in a study carried out in a Danish male general population . We observed that dietary factors modulated the values of SF and TS in the expected manner and could, increase or decrease iron absorption and body iron (total iron intake increased and calcium decreased TS and SF values). However, dietary heme iron intake did not enter significantly into the equation (data not shown). This contrast with several reports suggesting that heme iron ingestion affect iron status and absorption in individuals with HFE mutations . It would appear that there is a decrease in the control of iron absorption in subjects heterozygous for C2. Y . We do not know if this mechanism applies equally in other HFE mutations . In agreement with other investigations . On the other hand, the consistent lower TS and SF related to the intake of dietary calcium and fiber among males with HFE mutations may be considered a recommended dietary intervention. In conclusion, the C2. Y/H6. 3D compound heterozygote genotype is associated with an increase in TS and SF values compared to the wild type. The C2. 82. Y heterozygote, H6. D heterozygote and homozygote and H6. D/S6. 5C compound genotypes are related to increase in TS, but do not affect SF levels. The S6. 5C heterozygote genotype does not significantly modify TS and SF. There is an interaction between the phenotypic manifestation on TS and SF of HFE mutations and gender. Iron intake as well as alcohol consumption increase, and dietary calcium and fiber cause a decrease in the indicators of iron status in the population, some effects differing by gender. The high prevalence of HFE mutations in our population together with the high bio- availability of iron in our Mediterranean diet calls for prudence in introducing measures aimed at increasing iron intake in all the population. High calcium and fiber intakes and abstinence from alcohol should be recommended for males with HFE mutations. Studies with larger samples should explore further these results.
